Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was born
in Italy in 1870. She became the first woman to
graduate from medical
school at the University of Rome in 1896. Maria
began her work teaching mentally handicapped children
the basic skills of caring for themselves.
Dr.
Montessori then opened a Children's House for children
of normal intelligence and created a structured,
natural environment in which children could work
on their choice of activities.
The Children's House attracted
